Le Morne Brabant:

This basaltic monolith peninsula is a remnant of the volcanic past  and you will be humbled just by its majestic flanks. This was a safe haven for maroons (runaway slaves) in the colonial era and this is amply documented. Measuring 556 metres in height, the slaves would often throw themselves from the apex into the void to escape being caught alive. These memories are deeply entrenched in the locals’ memories. In 2008, UNESCO declared this as a world heritage site. Archaeologists and geologists thrive here. Situated in the west coast, The public beach of Le Morne is easily accessible from the coastal road.

Walk with lions, tigers and caracals

Lions and tigers may be carnivorous somewhere else, but not here at Casela Natural reserve.

Ganga Talao

Grand Bassin is a crater lake about 550 meters above sea level with a depth of between 50 and 55 feet.In 1972 a priest from India brought sacred water from the Ganges and amid much ceremonial poured the holy water into the lake. From then on the lake would be known as Ganga Talao. Ganga for Ganges and ‘Talao’ means ‘pool’.Having several temples erected around it, it is, however, primarily known to pay tribute to Lord Shiva, who is represented by a 33-metre-tall statue, the tallest on the island.

Swim with dolphins

Going to Mauritius and discovering the dolphins coming in and out of the water is another innocent activity of mammals I found in Mauritius. You will be welcomed by dozens of dolphins begging you to play with them.

Dolphins are one of those aquatic mammals which are very intelligent, helpful and faithful.

This activity is conducted by professionals to ensure the animals and their habitats are scrupulously respected.

Coloured earths of Chamarel.

The seven coloured earth is a natural phenomenon and a prominent tourist attraction. The colours evolved through conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals.

It is a relatively small area lodged in the village of Chamarel and discovered in the 1960s. The sand dunes comprise of seven distinct colours (approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow). Unscathed by rain or wind, this surreal place will lead many will fall in love with it.

Black River Gorges

You will do injustice to yourself if you don’t spend time in what is by far the largest natural reserve and home to a dwindling 1% endemic species. It harbours about 311 species of native and endemic flowering plants and 9 species of birds, which are found only in Mauritius.

With the help of the guides, you will discover Mauritius’ natural heritage.  You can follow one of the several trials and you will find dense forests with spectacular vistas, waterfalls and rivers in which you can enjoy a quick dip. There exist several points of entry, the main one being in Black River. A hike will take you into the heart of the indigenous forest with many panoramic views. The views you will encounter during this hike are breath taking: A wide, beautiful gorge (canyon) curving dramatically down between a series of mountains, with beautiful waterfall scampering down a range of mountains.

Île aux Cerfs Island

Île aux Cerfs Island , known in English as the deer island is an island near the east coast of Mauritius in the Flacq district. This paradise island of Mauritius constitutes of around 100 hectares of land. Nowadays there are no more deers on the island, but you will find there some of the worlds beautiful beaches and as such it is one of the must place to visit and see in Mauritius.

Ile Aux Cerfs is famous for its sandy beaches, beautiful lagoon and big selection of activities and facilities. In Ile Aux Cerfs you are sure to have a day of relaxation and fun on one of the picture-postcard beaches, and to enjoy a swim and snorkeling in the lagoon.

Tamarind Falls

The Tamarind Falls are set away on the cliffs of the Black River. This magnificent location hosts breathtaking views over the South Western coast; a sight not to be missed! It is one of the most beautiful and serene places in Mauritius, where one can discover the lush green vegetation along with some indigenous plant species and tropical birds.

Crocodile & Giant Tortoise Park

The Crocodile & Giant Tortoises Park which is home to various species of animals, reptiles and plants is set in a beautiful rain forested valley with natural freshwater springs, full of prawns and fish.

The native delicacies

·           DhollPuri: By far the most common street food in Mauritius, the modified version of the Indian poori, DhollPuri, is a fried flatbread that is usually served with a RougailleMauricien, a spicy tomato-based sauce, Mauritian chicken curry or even with kheer.

·           Mines Frire: The Mauritian version of Chinese chow mein, Mines Frire is a noodle dish cooked with chicken, prawns and pork and topped with an omelette.

·           Seafood: From lobsters, prawns, shrimp, crab to endless varieties of fish, some of the freshest seafood is to be had in Mauritius.

·         Mazavaroo: Chillies is the chosen spice when it comes to Mauritian cooking. Mazavaroo is a chilli paste concoction combined with ginger, garlic and lemon. Guaranteed to add some extra zing to any meal.

Tada! Shopping Time

Le Caudanwaterfront  has a good variety of shops, food stalls and restaurants and attractions to keep most people entertained. There is also a casino.

It is very pretty to just walk around and take a look without having to buy anything. There is open parking and paid parking.
